La Garde-Adhémar

A hilltop village in the Drôme, one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France: Romanesque church, herb garden and views over the Rhône valley.

What to see, what to know

In the Drôme, La Garde-Adhémar is built on a rocky ridge overlooking the Rhône valley, above Pierrelatte. The village, which holds the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France label, has kept its medieval ramparts.

At the heart of the village, the church of Saint-Michel is a 12th-century Provençal Romanesque building, recognisable by its two opposing apses and its octagonal bell tower.

The Jardin des Herbes, which holds the "Jardin remarquable" label, brings together more than 200 species of medicinal and botanical plants. At the foot of the village, the Val des Nymphes preserves the chapel of Notre-Dame, the only remnant of a place that was inhabited until the 13th century.
