Aven d'Orgnac
A chasm with gigantic chambers, awarded the Grand Site de France label, and its Cité de la Préhistoire, south of the Ardèche Gorges.

What to see, what to know
On 19 August 1935, the caver Robert de Joly and four companions went down into a chasm that the people of Orgnac called the Aven du Bertras. They found immense chambers, which opened to the public as early as 1939.
The tour takes you through these vast spaces and their rock formations. The upper chamber bears de Joly's name: it is more than a hundred metres long, beneath a ceiling some thirty metres high.
Above ground, the Cité de la Préhistoire, opened in 2014, covers 350,000 years of prehistory through authentic objects. The site has held the Grand Site de France label since 2004.
